Richmond Film Society Presents ‘The Truffle Hunters’Members Only
‘The Truffle Hunters’ (Italy, 2019)
The film offers a window into the world of truffle hunters in the forests of Piedmont, northern Italy and the subsequent trading and haggling which ensues. The elderly hunters live humble and traditional lives in old country homes and although the main characters are never explicitly introduced, the film’s observational vignettes draw the audience intimately into their daily lives and, to a lesser extent, those of the various traders and middlemen.
This handful of old men and their dogs hunt the rare and expensive white Alba truffle, which takes five years to grow in the wild, can only be harvested for a few months of the year and has resisted all of modern science’s efforts at cultivation. As a consequence, demand from wealthy patrons has increased year after year as the supply has decreased owing to climate change and deforestation. Hence, we see buyers taking turns earnestly to sniff prize truffles at auction, with one particularly fine specimen selling for €100,000.
The film is suffused with warmth and humour throughout and, at its very heart, is the love that exists between old men and their dogs. The result is an eccentric, immersive and totally charming documentary. One critic effusively described ‘The Truffle Hunters’ as a film “that lies at the intersection of documentary, Italian neorealism and Renaissance painting”, whilst another remarked that one has to love a movie that credits its dogs before its executive producers.
This screening is ‘members only’. Please see www.richmondfilmsoc.org.uk for up to date details.

Season 58 Membership is Closed
Owing to renewals from the vast majority of our existing members and a significant number of new joiners, our membership cap of 250 has now been reached. Accordingly, we are not in a position to offer any further membership for Season 58. For our 58th season, we held the price of £40 (the 1998 fee), which equates to £2.11 per film. For full-time students, membership is offered at the concessionary rate of £25 for the season.
We do, however, hope to make non-member tickets available to purchase for individual screenings early in the new year (see below).
The season, which runs until June 2022 with screenings on alternate Tuesdays at The Exchange, comprises 19 films of international repute, including features from Europe, Africa, Japan, Saudi Arabia and South Korea. See www.richmondfilmsoc.org.uk for full details of the programme.
Please note that this screening will be ‘members only’, although we hope to make non-member tickets available early in the new year, depending upon how the pandemic develops.
When they do become available, non-member tickets will remain at £5 (full-time students £3). Subject to availability, tickets can be purchased in advance from The Exchange’s Box Office – by telephone on 020 8240 2399 or online www.exchangetwickenham.co.uk
