Richmond Film Society Presents ‘The Beasts’£3 – £5
A middle-aged French couple move to a remote Galician village to start a new life. Their plan is to grow and sell their own eco-friendly crops and to give back to the community by renovating abandoned village houses in order to make them habitable. Unfortunately, their good intentions and enthusiasm are interpreted as patronising privilege and the couple’s presence arouses resentment, xenophobia and escalating hostility from their neighbours. Tensions are further inflamed by the couple’s vetoing of a communal plan to sell out to a wind-farm developer, which, for the locals, was seen as a lucrative payday and a one-off opportunity to liberate themselves from a lifetime of toil on the land.
The film is inspired by real events involving a Dutch couple, which occurred between 2010 and 2014, and which have already been the subject of a 2016 documentary, Santoalla. They have now been fictionalised by the director and co-writer of The Beasts, Rodrigo Sorogoyen, in his tense, unsettling and emotionally charged psychological thriller.
The film went on to win 56 awards worldwide. Among those were nine Goyas – including for Best Film, Director, Original Screenplay and Leading Actor – as well as the César Award for Best Foreign Film.
