USA (2017)

Set over one summer, the film follows the lives and adventures of a group of young children living in a budget motel near Disney World, whose often transient residents live a hand-to-mouth existence. It focuses, in particular, on a fearless, hyper-active and ebullient little six-year old girl, Moonee, and her loving but dissolute young mother, who is little more than a child herself. Whilst it addresses serious issues facing those living on the margins, the film is, at its heart, a wondrous and humorous child’s-eye view of the world, featuring outstanding naturalistic performances from first-time actors and, arguably, a career-best from the Oscar-nominated Willem Defoe as the world-weary and warm-hearted motel manager.

The film garnered 58 awards worldwide and five-star ratings from The Guardian (“thrillingly vibrant”), the Telegraph (“hysterically rude, visually stunning”) and the Independent (“one of the best films made about childhood in recent years”).

About Richmond Film Society

Richmond Film Society was formed in 1963 and has since screened nearly 780 films. Our objective was, and remains, to bring our community the very best in World Cinema. Our seasons run from September to April and attract an aggregate audience of just under 2,000.

Season 56 Membership

In recognition of the loyalty and support of our members over many years and the substantial growth in our membership and audience figures this Season, the Committee have decided to reduce the membership fee for Season 56 by one third from its current level of £60 and to extend the programme from 15 to 16 films. Accordingly, the cost of membership for next season will be £40, representing an unbeatable bargain of £2.50 per film. The concessionary seasonal membership fee for full-time students in Season 56 will be reduced from £35 to £25. Season 56 commences on 18 September 2018.

Membership includes free admission to all 16 screenings, free admission to the Christmas party, input into future film selection and details of other local arts-related events through our affiliation with Arts Richmond.

The cost of non-member tickets for Season 56 will also be reduced from the current price of £6 to £5 (full-time students £3). Tickets can be purchased on the night (cash only), in advance from The Exchange’s Box Office (in person or by telephone on 020 8240 2399) or online from TicketSource.
