Richmond Film Society Presents ‘120 BPM’ (France)£5/3
Richmond Film Society Presents ‘120 BPM (Beats Per Minute)’ (France)
RFS’s Season continues with Robin Campillo’s drama on AIDS/HIV activism in early nineties Paris, focusing upon the ‘Act Up’ group, who lobbied for legislation, research and treatment to combat the global pandemic and perceived government indifference. The film meshes the political with the personal to powerful effect, featuring a romance between two of the members, whilst also reflecting the tension and infighting within the group, with some advocating disruptive and angry protest and others a more conservative approach, fearing that radical action would undermine their message.
Summed up by The Guardian as a “modern classic”, ‘120 BPM’ won 47 awards worldwide, including six Césars and the ‘Grand Prix’ at Cannes.

About Richmond Film Society
Richmond Film Society was formed in 1963 and has since screened nearly 800 films. Our objective is to bring our community the very best in World Cinema. Our seasons run from September to June and attract an aggregate audience of over 4,000 attendees.
Films are shown at 8.00pm sharp on alternate Tuesdays (no trailers and no ads) and are screened at The Exchange. On screening nights, the Bar is open from 7.00pm and remains open after the film. Drinks can be taken into the auditorium and coffee, tea and snacks are also available. Film notes are provided for each screening and audience feedback is obtained via response slips.
Season 57 Membership – 10 September 2019 to 16 June 2020
Season 56 membership was closed earlier this year owing to a sharp increase in membership and attendances, although non-member tickets have remained available for all films. The Committee have now finalised plans for next Season – our 57th – which will commence on 10 September 2019.
For the current Season 56, membership subscriptions were reduced last year by a third to £40 – a return to the 1998 fee. For the forthcoming Season 57, the membership fee will be held at £40. The Season will also include two extra films in May and the Twickenham Festival Film in June, so that the cost of the 19-film programme is the equivalent of £2.11 per film. For full time students, membership will continue to be offered at the concessionary rate of £25 for the season.
Members’ Priority Period for Renewal – until 30 June 2019
Having regard to The Exchange’s 285-seat capacity, there is a cap on membership at 230.
Membership renewal for Season 57 is now open to existing members, who have a priority window to renew until 30 June. Thereafter, Membership will be opened up to those on our membership waiting list.
Existing members should complete the Subscription Renewal Form on our website and hand it, together with your remittance, to Sally or Sara on the ticket desk or to any other committee member. Regrettably, the Society is unable to accept credit card and contactless payments. Alternatively, please send the form and a cheque – made payable to ‘Richmond Film Society‘ – to: Sally Maynard, 89 Third Cross Road, Twickenham, TW2 5DY – tel. 020 8893 3503. Membership cards will be sent out in late summer.
Join The Membership Waiting List
Any non-members who wish to join the membership waiting list should also please fill in the same form on our website, ticking the relevant box. After 30th June, we shall contact you and, assuming that the cap has not been reached, you will then have until 31st July to join before we open up membership to all from 1 August.
Should membership be closed, there will always be a number of tickets available to purchase for individual screenings.
Hard copies of the Subscription Renewal Form will be available at all our forthcoming screenings, including a provisional list of the films from which next Season’s 19 will be chosen.
