- A Sunday In Hell: Special Film Screen with Q&A
- Introduced by William Fotheringham
Jorgen Leth’s film of the 1976 edition of Paris-Roubaix, the toughest one-day race in cycling, is regarded as one of the greatest sports documentaries of all. Leth’s groundbreaking use of more than 20 cameras along the race route, as well as footage shot from a helicopter pioneered techniques that have gone on to become standard in high-level sport coverage.
‘A Sunday in Hell’ captures all the dusty atmosphere of a hot day in April 1976: it is not just the story of the riders, led by Eddy Merckx, taking on the tough cobbled roads of northern France but also of the spectators, protesters and local dramas they pass en route.
This rare screening will be introduced by William Fotheringham, of The Guardian, who is the author of a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film: ‘Sunday in Hell: Behind the Lens of the Greatest Cycling Film of All Time’.
William has covered professional cycling for over 30 years and is a former editor of both Cycle Sport and Procycling magazines. His many acclaimed books include ‘The Greatest: The Times and Life of Beryl Burton’; ‘Put Me Back on My Bike: In Search of Tom Simpson’; and ‘Merckx: Half-Man, Half-Bike’.
